At the end of World War II, Leon Stark returns to the tiny town of Murphy, in the high plateau desert of southwestern Idaho, whole in body, but not necessarily in mind. Still haunted by the horrors he’s experienced in four years of combat in Europe, and plagued by visions of a guitar-playing vagabond who taunts him with songs that echo his own tormented thoughts, he struggles to find a foothold with reality.

But he’s not the only one in Riverton who brought pieces of the war home with them, and among them are some who wish Stark had never returned. As he slowly begins to rebuild his life, a series of dark secrets emerge, threatening to unravel the small community, and Stark must decide between doing the right thing and saving his own sanity if he is ever to find a place in his hometown again.
